When the Sacred Becomes a Trend
Thoughts and feelings about the viral trend: “Almost forgot this is the whole point.”
A couple of weeks ago, I saw a post on social media showing a bedroom bathed in sunlight, green grass outside the window, and a cup of coffee. The caption read, “Almost forgot this is the whole point.”
My first thought was: This is amazing. People are starting to understand that life is a Ceremony! They’re waking up to the magnificent in the mundane.
Then I realized it was part of a viral social media trend, and my thoughts and feelings changed.
Part of me felt annoyed that yet another viral wellness trend is taking off without crediting the ancient roots of mindfulness.
Part of me remembered: mindfulness doesn’t ask for credit, it asks for presence.
Part of me thinks maybe this is the influencer's version of mindfulness, and maybe that’s ok. Maybe mindfulness needs to be delivered in different ways for different folks for the greater good of humanity. Whether reading a book on Eastern philosophy or consuming a post on social media, if both…
