Why I don’t like the question: How do you want to feel?

Many coaching questions can help us be introspective and reflective, allowing us to integrate the lessons and wisdom from our life experiences. One common coaching question makes my heart hurt when I see it. The question is: How do you want to feel?

Why can’t we just be open and welcoming to the unfolding of life and the human experience? Why are we trying to control and anticipate feelings rather than living and experiencing them as they arise?

The wisdom in mindfulness, presence, and spirituality is learning to live and grieve without needing to “gain” or “control.” This doesn’t mean we are passive participants in our lives. We can actively and meaningfully engage in the world and what matters to us without striving to feel a certain way.

Rather than “control” your life and how you feel about it, I invite you to co-create it and welcome the wisdom of all emotions as they arise, unfold, and fall away. Everything that is nature has three phases: birth, growth/stability, and decay/dissolu…
